Paper Abstract:      Using a case study about on-line training drawn from the Collaborative and Network Distributed Learning Environment Project (CANDLE EU IST 5th Framework:2000-2003), this paper examines the issues involved in transferring knowledge between Higher Education Institutions and Large, Medium and Small Enterprises. It analyses the views of the course designers and SME learners before going on to discuss the distinction between “theoretical” and “practical” knowledge that arose in the case study. It concludes by employing ideas from Activity Theory to evaluate a “brokerage” model of knowledge transfer used in the case study, and considers the model’s wider implications for the transition from formal to functional knowledge in the context of digital technology.
